Boy Kills Black Bear That Attacked His Father In Western Wisconsin, DNR Says
Brave Boy Defends Father From Black Bear Attack
A 12-year-old boy in western Wisconsin shot and killed a black bear that attacked his father on Sunday, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the town of Gordon, which is located about 120 miles northeast of Minneapolis.
The boy's father, 42-year-old Robert Nelson, was working in his backyard when he was attacked by the bear.
Boy's Father Stumbles Upon Bear
Nelson told the DNR that he was clearing brush when he came across the bear.
The bear charged at Nelson, knocking him to the ground.
Nelson's son, who was inside the house at the time, heard his father's screams and ran outside to help.
Boy Grabs Gun, Takes Aim
The boy grabbed a gun and shot the bear once, killing it.
Nelson was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The DNR said that the boy's actions were justified and that he was not charged with any crime.
Bear Attacks Are Rare
Black bear attacks on humans are rare in Wisconsin.
There have been only 10 confirmed black bear attacks on humans in the state since 1990.
The DNR said that the best way to avoid a bear attack is to be aware of your surroundings and to make noise when you are hiking or camping.
